A Short Background of Independent Catholic's History Back to the Diocesan Home Page The American Catholic Church Diocese of California is a self-governing or autocephalous church denomination with a rich history combining the Roman Catholic Church (Western Rite), The Old Catholic Union and their member national churches, as well as the Orthodox Churches. We are a growing community of faith which finds unity in the recognition and celebration of the diversity we have. We are an eclectic group of believers who know we will never have all the answers, but take great delight in asking the questions. Our ministries include both parishes as well as individual ministries so typical of members in Religious Orders. These individual ministries include: Hospice Care, Ethic Ministries, Street Ministries - Homeless persons, as well as those involved in Counseling and Physiological Therapy activities. Our parish locations serve as the spiritual centers, not only for worship, but for many active ministries, not only enriching our common lives together, but also reach out to the surrounding community. We reach out to the GLBT community and those who are divorced and remarried particularly those with a Roman Catholic (Western - Latin Rite) tradition of faith, the unchurched and all in search of God.

As part of our pastoral reform efforts, the American Catholic Church has eliminated the biased-based
"traditional" impediments to Holy Order. Our Secular Bishops, Priests
and Deacons, who have not opted to embrace the promise of celibacy, can exercise
the option to enter into the Sacrament of Marriage. In addition, candidacies for
Holy Order are now open to all qualified persons regardless of gender, sexual
orientation, marital status or racial/ethnic background. Candidacies for those
with a vocation to enter into religious life are also open to those without
prejudice to their orientation, gender or racial/ethnic background. Women
religious may also, depending on the charism of their community, enter into Holy
Order.
We have implemented pastoral reforms affecting the
celebration of the Sacrament of Marriage. The Church has reformed the process of
obtaining an annulment of marriage, which would permit one who has been divorced
to reenter the Sacrament of Marriage without unnecessary emotional or spiritual
trauma. We welcome all couples wishing to enter into the Sacramental
Vocation of Marriage.
We endorses the concept of family
planning and permits families, with the assistance of their physicians, to
practice medically supervised avenues to choose appropriate times to bring
children into their lives.
Our intentions of the pastoral reforms are very simple;
We wish to bring to the Lord's Table all people who have been denied their rightful place because
of the sins of social and theocratic prejudice.
Thus, we have committed ourselves to celebrating
Catholicism without any sinful acts of exclusion and with complete and
unconditional inclusion. We are the
We invite you to come celebrate with us.
